Cold Boot · computer repair · Liberty, Missouri · since 2002

Flat where we can be. Hourly only where we honestly cannot.

Most shops quote an hourly rate because it protects them. It also means the customer has no idea what a job costs until it is done, and that is the part we would rather not do.

Flat prices. Parts are separate and quoted before ordering. All figures illustrative.

The rule about when to stop

If the repair costs more than half of what the same machine sells for used, we will say so before you agree to it. That is the whole rule and we apply it against ourselves.

It is not always the right answer. A machine holding software that cannot be reinstalled, a laptop with a keyboard somebody has learned in fifteen years, a desktop running a sewing or a diagnostic package that is no longer sold: all of those are worth exceeding the rule for, and we will help you decide rather than decide for you.

What we say no to

  • Anything under manufacturer warranty. Go to them first. Opening it costs you the cover and costs us your goodwill.
  • Phones. There are two shops within a mile that do them properly and faster than we would.
  • Printers. Almost never worth the labour against the price of a new one, and we will tell you that on the phone rather than have you carry it in.
  • Cleanroom data recovery on a physically failed drive. That needs equipment we do not have. We will image what can be imaged, then hand you the name of the firm that does the rest, with no markup added.

Business and on-site

On-site is $120 an hour with a one hour minimum inside Liberty, Kearney, Smithville and Gladstone, and there is no call-out fee on top of that. For anything that is going to run past three hours we would rather take the machines back here, where the parts and the spares are, and it will cost you less.

What is not chargeable

  • Diagnosis, always, whether or not you go ahead.
  • Telling you a machine is not worth repairing.
  • Five minutes at the counter on something you can fix yourself. There is a lot of this and it is good for business.
  • A second look at something we already did, for as long as you own the machine.

Warranty on our work

Ninety days on labour, and whatever the manufacturer gives on a part, which is usually a year. If the same fault comes back inside ninety days it is ours and there is nothing to pay. If a different fault appears, we will be honest about which it is, and in the grey cases we have generally come down on your side, which is why people who came here in 2004 still come here.

Ring before you drive if it is unusual.

Thirty seconds on the phone tells you whether we are the right shop for it, and saves the trip when we are not.
